If you are looking for a more rewarding career or want to understand your options when it comes to teacher training, attend Love to Teach: Routes into Training on Wednesday 15 October from 5pm - 6pm.

Meet training providers as they present university and school-based routes. Early career teachers will share their journey into the profession and discuss the challenges and rewards based on their experiences.

The webinar is designed for those at the start of their teacher training journey, acting as a first step as you explore what routes are available in Portsmouth.

Meet our host

James Doherty, principal at UTC Portsmouth

James has been a part of UTC Portsmouth since before it opened its doors. Having studied biomedical sciences, he has carried his passion for science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) forwards through to the establishment and running of UTC Portsmouth.

James is an experienced leader with more than 10 years’ experience of coordinating and delivering physics, chemistry and biology courses in local schools.

As an educator his interests are in educational innovation at all ages and lectures both locally and regionally on this subject matter.

The webinar will begin with information on funding, entry requirements and top tips to get you started.

This will help you understand your options and set goals to get where you want to be.

Meet local training providers

Participating training providers in Portsmouth will present their university and school-based routes to help you understand the differences between the two.

They will showcase what makes their offer unique and provide information on the support available for trainee teachers.

Be inspired by early career teachers

Each training provider will introduce an early career teacher from their course to share their experience with attendees.

They will discuss the rewards and challenges of working in the classroom and provide useful insights to help you on your journey.

Ask questions using live chat

Training providers and early career teachers will rejoin the session for a live question and answer session at the end of the webinar.

Attendees will be able to use the live chat function to write their questions which will be put forward to the host. If we're unable to answer everyone's questions by the end of the session, we will update the website with responses from our training providers.

Meet our training providers

The University of Portsmouth has been a well-respected teacher training provider for many decades. Learning from a range of experts, we support you to become excellent teachers who excel in the profession. We offer a PGCE primary course and an undergraduate primary BEd course. We train secondary teachers on our PGCE courses in English, maths, the sciences, modern foreign languages and geography. We also have an extensive further education/post compulsory PGCE which covers a wide range of additional subjects.
The University of Chichester are rated an 'Outstanding' provider by Ofsted and hold a TEF 'Gold' teaching award. We offer undergraduate training (BA/BSc with QTS) for primary, primary with SEND, early years, secondary PE and secondary mathematics, and postgraduate training (PGCE) for primary, primary with SEND, primary MFL, early years, and the following secondary subject areas: biology, chemistry, physics, dance, history, maths, music and PE. All secondary routes can be taken with SEND. All our training routes include time spent in university and time spent in local schools.

TKAT SCITT, an Ofsted-rated 'Good' provider, is part of the Kemnal Academies Trust, which operates 45 primary, secondary, and special schools across the south-east of England. We also work with a wide network of partner schools to deliver high-quality initial teacher training. Our programme is a school-centred approach that leads to qualified teacher status (QTS) with a postgraduate certificate in education (PGCE), which is delivered via distance learning by our partner, Leeds Beckett University.

Inspiring Future Teachers (IFT) is a national school-centred provider of initial teacher training (SCITT). HISP Teacher Training is one of IFT's regional hubs, giving you the opportunity to train to teach in local primary and secondary schools whilst being part of a national network of trainee teachers. Their one-year postgraduate route to qualified teacher status (QTS) has the option to study for a masters level postgraduate certificate of education (PGCE).

What other routes into teacher training are available?

The webinar will focus on providers who offer school-based routes and university-based routes into teaching. Teacher degree apprenticeships are becoming a more established route into the profession. You can read our guide on teacher degree apprenticeships here.

Do I need to gain experience working with pupils before I apply?
Training providers recommend you have experience working with children and young people when you complete your teacher training application. This doesn’t have to be within a school or college. The webinar will provide a check list of what you need before you complete an application, acting as a first step.
